Choosing the correct device
The apps you’ll want to use for getting your uncensored news or social media fixes will more than likely be banned on the official App Stores. This means you’ll need a way of installing the apps which don’t meet the strict guidelines required by the App Store (Apple) and Google Play Store (Android).
Fortunately if you’re already on Android, you’re already good to go – it’s actually very simple to install (sideload) apps which aren’t on the store. This can be done out of the box, you just need to enable the “unknown sources” option in settings -> security. Once you’ve done that you can visit the unofficial app website of your choice, download the app (.apk file) you want, then click on the downloaded file to install it.
If you’re on Apple (iOS) things are much trickier and you may need to “jailbreak” your device. This is not for novices and there is a real risk of bricking your device. This will also void the warranty and can potentially open your device to security breaches. Please click through each of the sections below which explain the options available to you.
If you couldn’t care less for having apps “on the go” and you do most of your browsing on a desktop/laptop then you can skip this section. It really doesn’t matter if you’re using macOS (Apple computers), Windows, Linux or a Chromebook – at the time of writing this, none of them restrict what you can and can’t install on your system. This section is really only aimed at giving mobile device suggestions (phones and tablets).
